Drowning in the flood of information flying out of Copenhagen? We’re here to help

Monday, 14 December 2009 by IsabelBottoms

You may be following the whirlwind of stories in the press that is engulfing Copenhagen. Unless you’re superhuman you’re probably confused, as are many delegates here. For a country that can’t send many negotiators, keeping up with the endless simultaneous meetings, working groups and documents becomes an impossible task. Kiribati, the island state we are currently working with, are in this position.  So to keep us all up to speed on who is saying what we went to a useful briefing on the positions currently being advocated at Copenhagen. Arrived last night in Copenhagen to help out with alternative media here in Copenhagen and struck by the size of this beast, which reflects the enormity of the issues at stake here.  Copenhagen is not a big city and so it’s relatively easy to get from one place to another, but with numerous different conferences, from the main COP15 Climate Talks and surrounding sub-conferences at the Bella Centre, to the alternative Klimaforum09 set up by the Danish authorities for NGOs and other social movement groups, to the daily protests, to the many spaces for activists and protesters to stay at (and the hotels for the delegates) to the Candy Factory, where a mass bike workshop is recycling bikes left around the city for activists to use, to the kitchens set-up to feed activists, it’s all a little overwhelming. fair play? in the name of the UNFCCC?!

Monday, 7 December 2009 by IsabelBottoms

Today was our first day in the negotiations. Sunday was a period of adjustment for all my fellow UNfairplayers, who have never been to a UNFCCC meeting before in their lives, afterall, it’s quite a strange thing to do. For me it was just great to see old friends and look around at all the new ones I could hope to make. Loads of wicked people all in one place-what more could you wish for?! (more…)

Medics prescribe action on climate change

Sunday, 6 December 2009 by Guest Writer Gareth Simkins

Climate change is not just an ecological problem. It is not all about drowning polar bears. It is also bad for your health – but the good news is actions to fight it are good for you. (more…)

Hello.

Hello to everyone who reads this.

This is my first blog entry - I hope that it will be of interest.

I have given a fair bit of thought to what I should write about - and I’ve compiled a list of bullet points concerning some subjects (I think it unlikely that all those subjects will feature in this particular blog entry - it is more of a general list which I hope will last for many blog entries). The Forum 2009 in Cardiff

If it wasn’t for The Forum 2009, I probably wouldn’t have realised what a great organisation People & Planet is, and I almost certainly wouldn’t be working for them now. I’d been to Shared Planet a few months before and had a great time, and I’d been involved in the campaigns at my uni, but The Forum was my first real experience of People & Planet working together as a network. After a 3 hour journey, I am now back in my house in Leicester, sat n the floor as my housemates are sprawled across the sofas, watching X-Factor.

It was my first time at Shared Planet this weekend in Manchester. I had a wonderful time even though i was sleep deprived and got lost frequently.  (more…)
